Whiz kids aged 6-14 get a chance to demonstrate their scientific chops in a science fair on Saturday, 06 September 2014 at SM Cagayan de Oro.
Dubbed “Discovery Kids Science Fair”, the pioneering project is the brainchild of siblings Rina Victorio and Geli Paras, daughters of Cagayan de Oro’s local version of Leonardo da Vinci, Engr. Elpidio Magbag Paras.
“We observed that young school children hardly get any real exposure to science projects while they are in grade school,” noted Rina, President and General Manager of Parasat Cable TV Inc. who has two children Tia, 8 and Lala, 2. “So Geli and I thought of sponsoring this science fair for children aged 6-14 years.”
“Our educational system has forgotten the basics like rousing children’s interest in science and creative ability. In the United States, grade school students are asked to submit investigative projects and compete in school science fairs. At an early age, students are exposed to field trips to various museums and science venues,” Engr. Paras noted.

A good example is Nicolo Paras- Ong, Paras’ grandson aged 10, who was recently cited with a commendation from Rep. Richard Corcoran of the State of Florida, for topping the statewide Comprehensive Assessment Test in Mathematics.
Thus, the competition encourages parents to have their kids regularly watch the Discovery Kids, Channel 56 on Parasat’s Silver subscription package.

Discover Kids (Asia) has programs such as “Did You Know?”, “Science Trivia” and “Adventures for Kids”which encourages grade school children to have an interactive experience with science and its related fields.
