City Hall reconstitutes Historical & Cultural Commission

The city government has reorganized the City Historical and Cultural Commission following the expiration of the terms of the former members last January, 2016.

Inducted into office by Mayor Oscar S. Moreno during the city hall’s flag raising Monday, February 15, 2016 were Dr. Glory Sarmiento-Madale, Nicolas P. Aca, Jr. and Rene Michael D. Baños. Not present were Dr. Erlinda M. Burton and Fr. Jose Daniel D. Coronel, SSJV who had previous commitments.

City Ordinance No. 3554-93, as amended by City Ordinance No. 4560-94, created the “Cagayan de Oro Historical and Cultural Commission” which shall serve as an advisory body to the City Mayor and the City Council concerning local history and culture.

 

Among the duties, functions and responsibilities of the reconstituted commission are the collection, collation and preservation of historical, cultural, political and economic facts and artifacts, archeological relics and mementos, historical and cultural records, customs, beliefs, folkloric tales, songs, legends, and traditions from the Pre-Hispanic period up to the recent past of the people of Cagayan de Oro city and publish and/or exhibit them in proper public settings, or museum for public information and enjoyment.

 

It will also serve as a repository of the Historical and Cultural facts about Cagayan de Oro city and its ancient peoples, their ways of life, myths, beliefs, superstitions and legends and the data, events, persons and places that have contributed to the social, political, cultural, economic and spiritual development of the people.

 

In addition, the commission shall initiate and recommend to the City Mayor and the City Council projects that shall honor and commemorate significant historical and cultural events of Cagayan de Oro City, the construction of historical and cultural events of places like Agusan Hill, Makahambus Hill, Victoria Street, Gusa, Iponan and Agusan, the three original barangays of Cagayan de Oro City, Gaston Park, and the City Hall environs which were the site of the Battle of Cagayan, and the many other historical places, and to initiate all historical celebrations in the City as the Philippine Independence Day on June 12, the City Charter Day on June 15, Rizal Day on December 30, Bataan Day on April 9, and other important and memorable dates in our history.

 

Not the least, it is also charged with compiling biographies on the history of how the names of local barangays, sitios, and other places in Cagayan de Oro originated; to advise and recommend to the City Mayor and the City Council the renaming or naming of streets after local heroes, and/or former city officials and local citizens who have distinguished themselves in a way, in the field of public service and/or contributed to the growth and development of the city; and to act as the Board of Trustees of the City Museum.

 

The commission will coordinate with the City Tourism Council and other Special Bodies which are also concerned with the history of Cagayan de Oro and its people and their culture.

 

To ensure continuity of programs, the terms of office of the members shall initial be staggered with Dr. Burton as chair serving for three years, Dr. Madale and Fr. Coronel serving for two years, and Messrs. Aca and Baños serving for one year.

 

For its initial undertaking, the commission will meet to organize the activities for the city’s second festival, Himugso, scheduled for June 12-15, 2016. (CIO)
